Only days after the conclusion of President Andrew Johnson's Swing Around the Circle tour, the stop was an effort to drum up public support following the Civil War. The three men were traveling the nation after the National Union Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to support President Johnson's efforts. The tours ended in failure. Maynard, however, would later serve under Ohio-born President Rutherford B. Hayes as United States Postmaster General from 1880-1881.Upon Maynard's growth from the late 1880s through the early 1910s, the community became a small bustling village within its valley perimeters.
